One of the greatest American novels, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird tells the story of Jean-Louise “Scout” Finch, a six-year-old tomboy growing up in a sleepy town in southern Alabama during the 1930s. As Scout, her older brother Jem, and their friend Dill spend their days trying to unravel the secrets of the mysterious neighborhood recluse “Boo” Radley, Scout’s father, a respected lawyer named Atticus, is preparing for a trial that will shake the community. This beloved coming-of-age story has lost none of its significance as a stage play, and examines the ugliness of persecution, the power of compassion, and the courage that it takes to consider things from someone else’s point of view – to “climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”
